Each year, Masbia of Boro Park serves over 30,000 hot meals to those in need—elderly individuals, the homeless, and families facing crisis situations who have no means to cook for themselves. These meals are offered in a warm, restaurant-style environment, where clients are greeted and served by volunteers, just like in any other dining establishment.
A typical dinner includes a starter salad, a beverage, soup, a main protein such as chicken or fish, two hot side dishes, and a dessert. Every aspect of the experience—from the food on the plate to the kindness of our volunteers—is designed to preserve our clients’ dignity. It takes a full-time kitchen staff, hundreds of volunteers each week, and a great deal of coordination to make this possible. Currently, we serve close to 1,000 hot dinners each week.
Emergency Food Packages:
The other major part of Masbia’s work involves distributing grocery packages that provide the equivalent of nine meals per person. These packages are based on the USDA’s MyPlate nutrition guidelines, ensuring a healthy balance of grains, proteins, fruits, and vegetables.
